Our Verdict

The Akrapovic Slip-On Line (Titanium) is the best all-around exhaust for the BMW M2 (G87).

It strips 7.3 kg (about 16 lb) off the back of the car, wakes up the muffled S58 twin-turbo without a tune, and keeps the factory valves and OPF so it stays street-legal. If you want the biggest sound-per-dollar instead, the AWE Tuning SwitchPath cat-back at around $3,235 is our value pick.

The 2023-2025 BMW M2 (G87) hides one of the best engines BMW builds — the 453 hp (473 hp for 2025) S58 twin-turbo inline-six — behind a gasoline particulate filter (OPF/GPF) and a heavy center muffler that smother its voice from the factory. Fitting the right BMW M2 (G87) exhaust is the single most satisfying bolt-on you can do: it drops weight, unlocks the S58's real character, and on some systems adds a few honest horsepower. Below we compare five of the best G87 M2 exhaust systems we sell at NLP Performance — from a $5,996 titanium Akrapovic slip-on down to a $1,485 Remus axle-back — with verified specs, sound notes, and the fitment gotchas that catch buyers out.

Why does the G87 M2 need an aftermarket exhaust?

The G87 M2 leaves the factory quieter than it should because BMW straps a gasoline particulate filter and a large center muffler to the S58. That is great for drive-by noise regulations and terrible for the driving experience — the 3.0L twin-turbo six that makes 453 hp and 406 lb-ft (up to 473 hp and 443 lb-ft with the 2025 auto) sounds noticeably muted next to its uncorked potential. The stock system is also heavy. An aftermarket M2 G87 exhaust targets three things: sound, weight, and, to a smaller degree, flow.

Be realistic about power. The S58's factory turbochargers are already efficient, so a cat-back or slip-on alone yields modest gains — roughly +3 to +5 wheel horsepower on the AWE and Akrapovic systems, with aFe claiming up to +19 hp on its own dyno. Big numbers require downpipes and a tune. The real payoff of an exhaust is the transformation in sound and the weight pulled off the rear axle. Here are the key platform numbers your exhaust choice is built around:

BMW M2 (G87) exhaust comparison: 5 systems at a glance

Here are the five G87 M2 exhausts compared side by side. The two biggest decisions are system type (a slip-on/axle-back changes only the rear muffler and tips, while a cat-back replaces the mid-pipes for more flow) and valve control (valved systems can whisper at cruise and roar on demand; non-valved systems are always loud). 1. Akrapovic Slip-On Line Titanium — Best Overall M2 G87 Exhaust

The Akrapovic Slip-On Line is the best BMW M2 (G87) exhaust overall because it delivers the biggest weight savings on this list while staying quiet enough for the street. Machined from aerospace-grade titanium with hand-crafted carbon-fiber tailpipes, it saves 7.3 kg (roughly 16 lb, about a 33% reduction versus the stock rear section) and adds a claimed +5.3 hp and +13.5 Nm at 2,800 rpm — no ECU remap required. Because it is a slip-on that mounts to the factory valved mid-section, it retains OE valve control and is ECE type-approved for OPF cars, so it stays street-legal.

2. HKS x STUDIE HKSTUDIE — Best Boutique JDM Exhaust

The HKSTUDIE system is a limited collaboration between HKS and BMW tuning house STUDIE, and it is the connoisseur's choice for a manual G87 M2. Contrary to a common assumption, it is built from SUS304 stainless steel — not titanium — and weighs 39 kg complete. It deletes the center muffler for a free-flow layout that cuts exhaust backpressure by up to 40% versus OEM, and it is tuned with frequency analysis to kill the roughly 100 Hz highway drone while emphasizing the 200-600 Hz range you actually want to hear. HKS quotes up to +5 kW and +35 Nm. One critical fitment note: this system fits the 6-speed manual (6MT) only.

3. AWE Tuning SwitchPath Edition — Best Value and Best Daily Driver

The AWE Tuning SwitchPath Edition is our value pick and the best daily-driver exhaust for the G87 M2. It is a valved cat-back built from dual 3-inch U.S.-sourced T304L stainless with a precision X-pipe, made in the USA, capped with quad 4.5-inch (114mm) double-walled slash-cut tips in Chrome Silver or Diamond Black. The SwitchPath valves piggyback on the factory drive-mode buttons, so closed it is a refined near-stock howl and open (Sport / Sport+) it uncorks — and AWE's patented 180 Technology drone cancellation keeps highway cruising civil. Gains are a modest +3 hp / +4 lb-ft at the wheels, and it is stated 50-state emissions compliant with no tune. If you want the same build but always-loud, the non-valved AWE Track Edition runs about $2,155 and saves 13 lb.

Things to Consider

  • Stainless build weighs more than a titanium system
  • Power gains are minimal without downpipes and a tune

4. aFe MACH Force-Xp Cat-Back — Best Sound-Per-Dollar

The aFe MACH Force-Xp is the loudest, most aggressive value cat-back for the G87 M2. It uses 3-inch to 2.5-inch mandrel-bent 304 stainless tubing, 100% TIG-welded, with a high-flow metallic-black muffler and a mitered-merge X-pipe, and it retains the factory-style valves and hangers for a clean install. It is finished with quad 4-inch tips available in carbon fiber, black, or polished. aFe's in-house dyno claims up to +19 hp and +22 lb-ft — the largest advertised gain here — and the tone is a deep, aggressive roar. Note: aFe does not publish a CARB or 50-state statement for this specific part number, so confirm your local emissions rules before buying.

Things to Consider

  • Non-valved — can drone at steady highway cruise
  • No published CARB / 50-state statement for this part

5. Remus Sport Axle-Back — Lowest Entry Price

The Remus Sport is the lowest-cost way into a valved G87 M2 exhaust, but read the fine print. This is an axle-back muffler section, handmade in Austria from stainless steel with 76mm piping (versus 70mm stock), integrated valves, and up to 2.1 kg of weight savings. The listed price of about $1,485 covers the muffler only — installation requires the separate Remus connection tube package (roughly $1,890, because the original exhaust must be cut) plus a tail-pipe set, so the real installed cost lands closer to $3,400 once you add tips. The EC-homologated 081023 1500 is street-approved; the racing 081023 1510 version is not.

Slip-on vs cat-back vs axle-back: which should you buy?

A slip-on or axle-back replaces only the rear muffler and tips, while a cat-back replaces everything from the catalytic converters back, including the larger mid-pipes. In plain terms: axle-backs and slip-ons are the cheapest and easiest and are mostly a sound-and-looks change; cat-backs flow the best and give the biggest change in tone and (modest) power because they open up the mid-section too.

For the G87 M2, the Akrapovic is a slip-on and the Remus is an axle-back — both bolt to your factory mid-pipes. The HKS, AWE, and aFe systems are cat-backs that replace the mid-section for the fullest sound. If maximum flow and volume are the goal, choose a cat-back; if you want the lightest weight or the lowest entry cost, a slip-on or axle-back makes sense.

Titanium vs stainless steel: does the material matter?

Akrapovic titanium slip-on muffler detail for BMW M2 G87

The Akrapovic titanium muffler saves 7.3 kg over the stock rear section.

Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than stainless steel of the same design and produces a higher-pitched, more metallic and exotic note; stainless is deeper and throatier, far more affordable, and still corrosion-resistant. On this list, only the Akrapovic slip-on is titanium — which is exactly why it saves 7.3 kg where the stainless AWE Track Edition saves about 13 lb and the Remus axle-back saves 2.1 kg. If chasing every gram matters, pay for titanium; if you want a deeper tone and more tips for your money, quality T304 stainless like the AWE and aFe systems is the smart buy.

Installation, valves and legality notes

Every system here mounts to the S58's factory valved section and needs no tune to run correctly. Valved systems — Akrapovic, HKS, AWE SwitchPath, and Remus — let you keep near-stock manners at cruise and open up on command, while the non-valved aFe and AWE Track Edition are always at full voice. On legality: the AWE systems are stated 50-state emissions compliant, the Akrapovic is ECE type-approved for OPF cars, and the Remus 081023 1500 is EC-homologated (its 081023 1510 racing version is not). aFe does not publish a CARB statement for its G87 part, and any OPF/GPF or catalyst delete is off-road use only. At our Tampa, FL shop, these bolt-on cat-backs and slip-ons are typically a 1.5-3 hour install with hand tools and a lift.

A full cat-back like the aFe replaces the mid-pipes and muffler for the biggest change in flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an aftermarket exhaust add horsepower on the G87 M2?

Only a little. Cat-backs and slip-ons give small, dyno-verified gains — AWE quotes about +3 hp / +4 lb-ft at the wheels and Akrapovic roughly +5 hp, while aFe claims up to +19 hp on its own dyno. The main reasons to upgrade the S58 twin-turbo are sound and weight; meaningful power requires downpipes and a tune.

Is a BMW M2 (G87) exhaust loud, and will it drone?

A cat-back is noticeably louder than the OPF-muffled stock system, but drone depends on the design. Valved systems like the AWE SwitchPath, Akrapovic, HKS, and Remus stay near-stock quiet with the valves closed, and AWE adds patented 180 Technology drone cancellation. Non-valved systems such as the aFe and AWE Track Edition are always on and can drone at steady highway cruise.

What is the difference between slip-on, cat-back, and axle-back?

A slip-on or axle-back replaces only the rear muffler and tips, so it is the cheapest and easiest and mostly changes sound. A cat-back replaces everything behind the catalytic converters, including the larger mid-pipes, for the best flow and the biggest change in tone and power. On the G87 M2, the Akrapovic is a slip-on, the Remus is an axle-back, and the HKS, AWE, and aFe are cat-backs.

Does an exhaust fix the muted GPF sound on the G87 M2?

Yes — that is the main point of the upgrade. The factory gasoline particulate filter (OPF/GPF) and center muffler heavily damp the S58, so a cat-back or center-muffler-delete system restores the volume and character without removing the emissions filter itself. The HKS deletes the center muffler while the AWE and aFe use freer-flowing mufflers.

How much weight does a titanium M2 exhaust save?

Akrapovic's titanium slip-on saves 7.3 kg (about 16 lb, roughly a 33% reduction over the stock rear section). Titanium is around 40% lighter than stainless of the same design, so stainless systems save less — the AWE Track Edition trims about 13 lb and the Remus axle-back about 2.1 kg.

Do I need a tune with a bolt-on exhaust?

No. Akrapovic, AWE, and aFe all state no ECU remap is required for their cat-back or slip-on systems, because they mount to the factory valved section and keep OE valve control. A tune only becomes necessary when you add downpipes or chase serious power.

Why does the HKS HKSTUDIE exhaust fit only the manual M2?

HKS lists the HKSTUDIE EX003 as fitment for the 6-speed manual (6MT) G87 M2 only; the manual and 8-speed automatic cars route their exhausts differently. HKS does not publish a specific reason, so if you have the automatic, choose the AWE, aFe, Akrapovic, or Remus instead.

Will an aftermarket exhaust void my BMW warranty?

Not automatically. In the US, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act means BMW cannot void your entire warranty simply for fitting an exhaust, but they can deny a specific claim if the part caused the failure. Keeping a street-legal, OPF-retaining system and saving your factory parts is the safest approach; a GPF or catalyst delete is not emissions-legal for road use.
